गोविन्द बल्लभ पंत राष्ट्रीय हिमालयी पर्यावरण संस्थान के वैज्ञानिकों ने लद्दाख क्षेत्र में दो वर्षों तक इस प्रयोग को सफल कर दिखाया। उन्होंने यहां सीवेज के अपशिष्ट जल को उपचारित कर हाइड्रोपोनिक प्रणाली से सफलतापूर्वक टमाटर ओर अन्य सब्जियां उगाई। इस नवाचार के आविष्कारकों में डॉ. ललित गिरी, मोहम्मद हुसैन, जिग्मेत चुश्कित आंगमो, डॉ. संदीपन मुखर्जी, डॉ. इंद्र दत्त भट्ट और डॉ. सुनील नौटियाल शामिल हैं।
लद्दाख में कम वर्षा, अत्यधिक ठंड और सीमित कृषि भूमि जैसी चुनौतियों को देखते हुए यह तकनीक एक बड़ा समाधान बनकर उभरी है। लेह के बोम्बगढ़ क्षेत्र में स्थित मल-कीचड़ उपचार संयंत्र से प्राप्त जल को प्राथमिक, द्वितीयक व तृतीयक उपचार, निस्पंदन और यूवी विसंक्रमण के बाद पॉलीकार्बोनेट ग्रीनहाउस में उपयोग किया गया। ड्रिप आधारित हाइड्रोपोनिक प्रणाली, कोकोपीट ग्रो बैग और गुरुत्व-आधारित पोषक तत्व वितरण से ऊर्जा-कुशल खेती संभव हुई।

अल्मोड़ा: मैदानी परीक्षणों में पारंपरिक खेती की तुलना में अधिक उत्पादन और बेहतर पोषण गुणवत्ता दर्ज की गई। टमाटरों में लाइकोपीन, बीटा-कैरोटीन व एंटीऑक्सीडेंट्स की मात्रा अधिक पाई गई, जबकि किसी भी प्रकार की भारी धातु या विषैले तत्व नहीं मिले।
